Music Department
Winship Middle School students enjoy a robust music program where all 6th graders take music and have the option of Band, Chorus or Orchestra specializations. 7th and 8th graders can opt to take Advanced Orchestra, Chorus, Concert Band, or Musical Theater as their elective. Concert Band students also have the option to enroll in a zero period EHS Jazz Band course that is traditionally held at the Eureka High School. A full description of our music classes are listed below.
Advanced Orchestra
Advanced Orchestra is a continuation of the elementary school program and gives students the opportunity to learn and understand musical notes, symbols, and terms as well as a chance to develop greater proficiency on their musical instrument. While students of all levels are welcome, previous instrumental experience is strongly recommended and daily home practice will be required. Students with no prior string experience may email the middle school orchestra teacher to discuss class expectations.
Chorus
Chorus students perform in the community for festivals, concerts and competitions. Students get to make music every day in a variety of styles, including contemporary, jazz, and multicultural.
Concert Band
Winship offers woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Students have opportunities to perform at games, in the community, for festivals, concerts, parades and competitions. Students get to make music every day and accept the challenge of strong musicianship.
Musical Theater
Musical Theater is for students who are interested in exploring theater arts. This is a "hands-on" approach to learn about the different aspects of theater. Students will learn about acting, directing, scene design, costumes, and stage make-up. The class includes team-building games and performance opportunities.
Eureka High School Jazz Band
Held at the Eureka High School campus during zero period (7:30-8:10 am), the EHS Jazz Band class is offered to students concurrently enrolled in Winship's Concert Band class.
