Elective Course Offerings

As an AVID school, Winship's rigorous academic program is focused on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR) in conjunction with the California Common Core State Standards. Core academic courses include Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science.

6th Grade Electives

Winship's 6th grade program helps students develop strong study habits, learn valuable organizational skills, and positively navigate complex social situations that often arise during the middle school years. Winship offers a 6th grade elective rotation that includes art, broadcast media, technology and AVID organization and college preparedness classes. Students will also alternate between physical education and music with students selecting either a band, chorus or orchestra specialization.

Zero Period: Winship offers two zero period options that begin at 7:30 am, a PE class for 7th and 8th grade on the Winship campus, and a Jazz Band class that is usually held at the Zane Middle School or Eureka High School campus. District transportation is not available to get students to their zero period, but is available for Jazz Band students to get from Zane/EHS to Winship after class. Taking zero period PE may enable students to take two elective classes. Jazz Band students must be concurrently enrolled in Concert Band.

Current Elective Course Offerings:

Advanced Art: Application Required. Students will engage with various art projects, including charcoal drawing, advanced shading techniques, digital art, ceramics, watercolor, printmaking. sculpture, painting, perspective drawing, comic strips, collaborative art projects (i.e. murals, group projects), and field trips. Because the Advanced Art class is a safe space for students who are interested and passionate about learning about art and art practices, behavior and grade history will be taken into consideration.

Advanced Orchestra: Advanced Orchestra is a continuation of the elementary school program and gives students the opportunity to learn and understand musical notes, symbols, and terms. as well as develop greater proficiency on their musical instrument. While students of all levels are welcome, previous instrumental experience is strongly recommended and daily home practice will be required. Students with no prior string experience may email the middle school orchestra teacher to discuss class expectations.

Art: Student will learn all types of art: drawing, printing, painting, sculpture and pottery! Everyone can do art and express their creative side. This class will give you the confidence and skills that you can take with you to high school and beyond!

Broadcast Media & Film: The production of a weekly news show is the focus of this course. Students will have the opportunity to develop writing, speaking, and production skills. Students will learn to operate sound and video systems. Students will learn how to use digital and video equipment along with photo and video editing tools. Students will produce short movies/commercials using a variety of hardware and software tools. Students will research and create multimedia projects for a variety of purposes, including animation, news reporting, marketing, and entertainment. Students may be asked to video various after school productions/activities.

Chorus: Chorus students perform in the community for festivals, concerts, and competitions. Students get to make music everyday in a variety of styles, including contemporary, jazz, and multicultural.

Concert Band: We offer woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Student have opportunities to perform at games, in the community, and for festivals, concerts, parades, and competitions. Students get to make music every day and accept the challenge of strong musicianship.

Digital Media: Explore the digital arts and get hands-on experience with graphic design, animation, Photoshop, video production, audio production, and more! Build your digital literacy, creativity, and problem-solving skills in this collaborative and fast-paced course.

Musical Theater: Musical Theater is for students who are interested in exploring the theater arts. This is a "hands-on" approach to learn about the different aspects of the theater. Students will learn about acting, directing, scene design, costumes, and stage make-up. The class includes team-building games and performance opportunities.

Eureka High School Jazz Band: Held at the Zane Middle School or Eureka High School campus during zero period (7:30-8:10 am), the EHS Jazz Band class is offered to students concurrently enrolled in Winship's Concert Band class. Transportation will not be offered to school, but bus transportation is offered after class from Zane/EHS to Winship.

Fitness & Skills for the Athlete: Fitness and Skills for the Athlete teaches students how to create both a fitness- and skill-enhancing program that matches their individual athletic needs. No matter what sport students participate in, whether for Winship or elsewhere, students will research specific training techniques, drills, and important fitness concepts that will be used to improve their own performance. Students will set goals, participate in fitness testing, and continuously strive to improve their performance.

Office Assistant: Application Required. Office Assistants assist with various office tasks, including writing and delivering passes for students, making copies, assembling packets, assisting with mailings, greeting parents, answering phones, helping in the library, and performing various administrative tasks as needed. Because the Office Assistant is a position of responsibility and professionalism, behavior and grade history will be taken into consideration.

Spanish: This course teaches basic language patterns and vocabulary while also infusing cultural education and understanding. It includes the practice and learning of written and conversational Spanish, which an emphasis on preparing students for high school language courses.

Student Leadership: Application Required. Student Leadership enables a student to work and understand the importance of effective leadership, working toward an assigned task, building self-esteem, and learning how to work in a team environment. Leadership students plan and coordinate spirit week events, rallies, dances, fundraising events, and assist with many other school activities on campus.
